In September 2023, a significant moment unfolded at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia, as Sheltered By Love, a philanthropic organization dedicated to community betterment, made its inaugural bus stop shelter donation. This symbolic gesture not only provided a practical solution for commuters but also paid homage to a beloved figure in the university’s history: Calder Smith Sherwood, III.

Calder Smith Sherwood, III, affectionately known as “Professor Sherwood,” was a stalwart presence at ODU, leaving an indelible mark on the institution and the lives of countless students. Serving as a faculty member in the College of Sciences from 1939 to 1977, Professor Sherwood imparted knowledge in chemistry, astronomy, and geophysical sciences with passion and dedication. Among his many students was George Jensen, one of the co-founders of Sheltered By Love, who fondly remembers Professor Sherwood as a favorite teacher and a source of inspiration.
